As Christmas approaches, many of us are looking forward to time with family, festive meals and a well-earned rest. But across the country, thousands of social care staff will be doing what they always do - turning up, caring deeply and supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.
At this time of year, it’s right that we recognise the incredible work of doctors and nurses in our hospitals. But it’s equally important not to forget the vital role played by social care professionals. In care homes, supported living settings and community services, carers will be working throughout Christmas Day, Boxing Day and into the New Year - providing comfort, dignity and companionship when it matters most.
Our Chairman, Mike Padgham, wanted to take a moment this Christmas to shine a light on the dedication of the social care workforce.
“At Christmas, it’s important that we don’t forget the thousands of social care staff who will be at work while many of us are spending time with our families,” says Mike. “Across social care, dedicated teams will be supporting people day and night, ensuring they are safe, cared for and never alone. Their commitment is extraordinary and deserves far greater recognition.”
Christmas can also be a challenging time for people who are lonely, bereaved or living far from family. Feelings of isolation can be heightened during the festive period, which is why checking in on others is so important.
A quick phone call, a knock on the door or a simple message to ask how someone is doing can make a world of difference. This Christmas, we encourage everyone to look out for neighbours, friends and family members who may be spending the holidays alone. Small acts of kindness help strengthen our communities and remind people that they are not forgotten.
Looking ahead to the year ahead, Mike also shared his hopes for the future of social care.
“My New Year wish is that 2026 is the year we finally see real, meaningful social care reform,” he says. “Social care has been overlooked for far too long. We need a system that is properly funded, values its workforce and recognises the essential role social care plays alongside the NHS.”
As we close another year, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to every member of our care teams who will be working this Christmas - and to social care professionals across the UK who continue to give so much of themselves every single day.
From everyone at Saint Cecilia’s Care Group, we wish you a peaceful Christmas and a hopeful New Year.
