People tell us that Alba Rose is a very special place and that when they first come in, that it doesn’t feel like a care home.
We are blessed to have a beautiful building full of original character and charm, set in expansive, well-tended and attractive gardens where we can deliver care and our residents can make their home.
Our residents love to relax and potter in the garden and they decide what we grow in it – like the apples we grow to make fresh apple pies in the kitchen.
That involvement runs through all the care that we provide and residents drive what we do. From the decoration in their own room and the communal areas to the food we eat and the activities that we enjoy, our residents decide it all.
Alba Rose is their home and they decide how it looks, how it feels and everything else – from when they get up in the morning, what they wear, what they do, what they watch on television or where they go to on one of our regular minibus trips out.
We have built a wonderful reputation locally, and with social services and our GPs, for providing relaxed, understanding care in a very special location. One told us “There is only one home that I would bring my dad to, and that is Alba Rose”.
Staff come here because they want to make a difference and that passion shows in their care. They get to know the residents well and understand their likes and dislikes. We know all our residents’ backgrounds and histories, which enables our staff to build good rapport. Residents particularly enjoy one-to-one time with our staff – a chance for a catch-up, a chat and a laugh.
All our food is freshly prepared and home cooked, using locally sourced ingredients and tailored to meet the likes, dislikes and dietary requirements of our residents. The lovely smell of delicious home cooked food often greets visitors when they arrive at Alba Rose.

Visitors to Alba Rose are first struck by our beautiful building and gardens. We have a delightful garden patio where residents can sit and enjoy a lovely view across our gardens to the fields beyond where sheep and horses graze.
When you come inside you enjoy a warm and friendly greeting in our bright and welcoming hallway.
An impressive staircase leads up to our upper floors and we also have a lift to make life a little easier.
Off the main hall is our lovely, spacious and light lounge, with comfortable chairs, a widescreen television and sound system – the perfect venue for our activities or some relaxation. Our residents and their visitors love to spend time in the lounge, enjoying activities, entertainment or some quiet time with their guests or our staff.
Further along the corridor, past our fish tank, is our delightful, bright and sunny dining room with its large windows giving an impressive view out to the lawn and our impressive gardens. Our residents thoroughly enjoy mealtimes, tucking into the delicious food prepared by our chefs and the chance to catch up with fellow residents and our friendly carers.
We are lucky to have a full-time activity co-ordinator who works with the residents to organise entertainment and activities during mornings and afternoons, from visiting musicians to crafts, games, gardening, baking and lots more. Thanks to a group minibus we also enjoy regular outings in the local area and are often joined by our residents’ relatives to make the trips even more special.
All our residents’ rooms are comfortably equipped and nicely decorated and have retained little character touches in keeping with the rest of the building, maintaining a warm, homely feel. Our residents like to bring in their own furniture, pictures and ornaments to add to that ‘home from home’ atmosphere.
Say hello to some of the key members of staff at our home.
Tanya Wormald
Registered Manager
Experienced manager Tanya Wormald’s passion for caring began following working with horses, where she worked mainly with polo ponies. Tanya made her move from caring for horses to caring for older and vulnerable people when she was living in Oakham and got a job in a care home as a care assistant.
She has never looked back and when her husband moved to take up a job at Ganton, near Scarborough, Tanya joined the team at what was then Queen Margaret’s Nursing Home in the town.
She worked her way up to Care Co-ordinator and then Deputy Manager.
After doing a few stints as stand-in manager at what by then had become Saint Cecilia’s Nursing Home, Tanya got the job of Registered Manager at Alba Rose in 2021.
She loves leading the team and ensuring that all the lovely residents at Alba Rose get the best of care in a welcoming, home-from-home environment.
“I think what gives me the greatest satisfaction is making a real difference to people’s lives,” she says. “And that is more than caring for the residents it is also giving comfort and peace of mind to their relatives too. I see what a huge relief it is to people to know that their loved one is happy and safe at a home that cares for them.
“They are then free to enjoy quality time with their relative, knowing that we are doing the caring and they have had all that stress taken away from them.
“A good day for me is when the residents are happy and contented and I can feel that me and the team have made a difference to each and everyone’s day by having a laugh and doing our very best for them.”
Claire Field
Head Cook
Providing Alba Rose residents with tasty and nutritious meals falls to the home’s experienced and talented Head Cook, Claire Field.
Claire previously worked as a cook in cafes and as a school dinner lady before coming to Alba Rose seven and a half years ago.
That experience stood Claire in good stead for the demanding but rewarding task of providing great, home-cooked meals to residents with a wide variety of personal preferences and dietary needs.
“Mealtimes are something that residents do look forward to and so it is very important that we give them something that they are going to enjoy,” says Claire.
She is trained in providing food in a care setting, which includes catering for those with special dietary needs and those with dementia,
“I also make it my business to know the residents and to understand what they like and don’t like – this is their home after all and you wouldn’t cook yourself something you don’t like, would you?
“Whether it is different choices of vegetables, portion sizes or whatever, we cater for all of their tastes to ensure they get the meal they want.”
Claire describes the food as ‘traditional home-cooking’ that is determined by the residents.
“We try different things from time to time and if they like it, it will stay on the menu,” she says. “At the end of the day it is the residents that decide what they want to have and that is how it should be.”
There is a choice but if a resident doesn’t fancy any of the options that day, Claire is always happy to make something different.
“As long as they are happy, I’m happy,” she adds. “I’ve had a good day if someone says, ‘thank you, I’ve enjoyed my lunch’ – that means a lot.”
